There is usually only one thing in the back of the mind of most people who have to trudge to work on days when the weather is gorgeous and the skies are clear. That one thing is escaping from the confinements of the office and getting out on the great green landscapes that are known to the world as golf courses.
Golf courses can be some of the most beautiful environments in all of sports. This is because successful golf courses are carefully developed and plotted out in a strategic manner. They can be designed by world famous architects or even by some of the top professional golfers in the world such as John Daly and Arnold Palmer. Once a golf course is designed and has a strong name backing it, it can take years to build because of all the careful construction with the formation of golf courses. If this is achieved, golf courses can gain world-renowned appreciation and will attract players for years to come.
Of course this is only if the golf courses are kept up to standards and offer not just challenging play, but a top-notch experience. Well-maintained golf courses offer precisely cut grass that is vividly green, raked sand traps, stunning professional landscaping, challenging and eye catching obstacles and world class service to its members and players. Two examples of crowning achievements in the construction of golf courses exist at Riviera Country Club and Oakmont Country Club.
Riviera Country Club is home to one of the country's most prestigious championship golf courses. It is located in Pacific Palisades, California, just outside Los Angeles. It opened in 1926 and immediately became known for its difficulty. Although it has been redesigned, the par for the course is still set at 71. It has been home to some of the biggest matches ever played at golf courses including the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Senior Open and most notably the Nissan Open, which is annually held at the Riviera Country Club.
Like all the great golf courses that have namesakes after famous golfers, Riviera Country Club is sometimes referred to as Hogan's Alley. This is after the famous golfer Ben Hogan, who dominated the course in the 1940s.
Another country club home to one of the world's most challenging and famous golf courses is Oakmont Country Club. Golf Digest has called Oakmont Country Club's golf course one of the five best golf courses in America. This is because of the extreme difficulty that even the best golfers face when playing on this course. It is located outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania near the Allegheny River. Not many golf courses can stake a claim as a National Historic Landmark, but Oakmont Country Club can. It was given this honor in 1987 for its continued success and being one of the best creations in golf course architecture.
Oakmont County Club has also been host to many U.S. Opens. In fact, it was host to the most recent U.S. Open in 2007 when Angel Cabrera of Argentina took home the championship. After this U.S. Open, many golfers were quoted as saying that this was one of the most difficult golf courses they have ever played on.
For those golfers whom are not members of these golf courses and want to play somewhere just as stunning, there are many discount courses to choose from. Usually discount courses are run through a promotion where a player must sign up with a discount pass and then choose from the listed golf courses. With discount courses, a golf player can select from many golf courses. Whether the player wants to shoot a quick round at their local course, or take a golf trip to one of the golf courses the player has never been to, it makes it more affordable.
Golf can be either a breathtaking sport or a relaxing time with a group of friends. Either way, golf courses are always there as a surreal getaway in a natural environment, surrounded by stunning scenery and top class hospitality. Whether a player chooses one of the most famous golf courses in the world or one of the discount courses, the game will always cherished by those whom love the experience of a great golf course.
